Parliament House

On Monday the 15th of May all the Year 4/5 classes went on an excursion to the city to visit Parliament house because we had been learning about the government in HASS.

We left the school at about 9.15 and walked to the train station. We were all very excited because we hadn't been on an excursion for a while. Our train finally came and it took about 30 minutes to the city. At the Adelaide train station we walked up the ramp and along North Terrace for about 100 metres and we were already at Parliament House.

We divided into 2 groups and half went with Mr Ramsey and the other half with Ms Leaney and Miss Metcalfe. While we were in Parliament House we got to visit the Red Room (The Senate) and the Green Room (the House of Representatives ) The colours of the 2 different rooms are a tradition that the Australian Parliament borrowed from the British Parliament, which has a red House of Lords and a green House of Commons. In these rooms we debated things like “Should school uniform be banned”. We passed a law in the lower house that everyone should wear a school uniform but when this went to the Higher house to make it a law it was passed in.  We all had lots of fun and joined in on all the debates. One group even got to visit the library, which was really amazing and interesting. We learnt so much and had so much fun.

For lunch we wandered down to the Festival Theatre grass and had fun rolling down the hill and playing handball and tag. To finish off the day we walked to the Democracy Centre which was near the State Library. It had lots of displays and activities all around the theme of Government. Exhausted we strolled back to the train station and had a relaxing ride home. We loved the excursion and learnt so many new things.

BY ROOM 22

My favourite thing was visiting the Red Room and passing the bill about uniform-Kase

I like the voting in the Red Room-Olivia, Alex.

I loved going into the Library and seeing the bookworm book and the giant newspaper-Alex, Emerson, Lachie and Rhianna.

I liked making the Youtube video in the Democracy Centre-Abiy, Myah

I like eating my lunch on the grass because I could muck around with my friends-Matilda, Gabby

The train to and from the excursion was lots of fun-Reubin, Ethan and Tom.

Ms Leaney liked it when they talked about the bell and how they lock the room off if the politicians don’t arrive in 5 minutes to complete the vote.

I wrote a note in the Centre of Democracy about what I would do if I was a leader- Jaikobe
