Autism Awareness Day

The United Nations General Assembly declared April 2nd to be World Autism Awareness Day. This day is about highlighting the need to improve knowledge and understanding of autism and autistic individual across the world.

What is Autism ?

A life-long neurological difference where the brain has not developed to how a 'typically developing' brain is expected to develop. Autistic individuals think, process, sense, move and interact differently.

Autism in not a mental health problem or an intellectual disability. But some people with autism may have this.  In the past doctors would separate conditions associated with autism but they now know based on research that it is part of one condition called autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

What are the Characteristics of Autism?

The main characteristics related to ASD fall into 2 broad areas:

  • difficulty with social interactions and communication
  • restricted and repetitive behaviours and interests

Autism Inclusion Teacher

Every public primary school has an appointed Autism Inclusion Teacher (AIT) in 2023. Here at our school, Fiona Prentice works in that role. Fiona supports staff to:

  • understand autism and support evidence-based practice in autism
  • build relationships and promote autistic student voice and agency
  • share evidence-based resources and training
  • suggest sensory and environmental adjustments.

If you have any concerns about your child and their development, please speak to their classroom teacher.
