Dear Parent/Caregivers,
Book Week Parade
Today we celebrated Book Week with a parade of characters from our favourite books. It was great to see so many of our children involved, with a great deal of effort going into the costumes by parents and families. We thank you all for this tremendous effort. I'd also like to thank parents for the dilgence with QR codes, masks and social distancing. It made for a great morning.
It was also fantastic to see so many staff involved. Check out the photos below!
Curriculum
Staff have been developing their understanding and the application of Learning Intentions (LI) and Success Criteria (SC) in their learning programmes. LI and SC are high impact strategies that support student learning. Students should be able to articulate what they are learning and why. I encourage families to regularly discuss with children the learning occurring at school.
COVID 19 Update
As the situation with COVID-19 evolves, the Department for Education continues planning and operating in line with advice from SA Health to support the safety and wellbeing of staff, students and the broader community.
The following measures remain in place until further notice as directed by the Department for Education:
- Continue to limit the number of parents on site, and when on site they must wear a face mask and practice physical distancing.
- All adults (including staff) must COVID-SAFE check in each time they enter the site.
In line with these directions, we will continue with students being dropped off at the school gates.
Although unfortunate, in 2021 we will not be able to have parents on site for Sports Day on Friday 10th September. After careful consideration and consultation, we established that we would be unable to safely and effectively manage the event with parents on site.
Sports Update
It’s great to see so many students representing our school in a variety of SAPSASA events.
Our girls Knock Out soccer team has progressed through to the semi-finals. All the best!
Mr Staker is currently selecting a team to participate in the Port SAPSASA Cross Country Carnival to be held on Tuesday 14th September.
The following students have been selected in the State SAPSASA Athletics carnival to be held on Tuesday 21st September: Jack F-S, Bernard R, Campbell H, Matilda H.
Good luck to Sarah M who was selected to participate in the Year 6 Port SAPSASA Soccer team and will play next week in the State SAPSASA Championships.
Mr Staker has also selected a girls football team (AFL) to participate in the Crows Cup on Tuesday 15th September.
Lastly, congratulations to Rhys, Joel, Iris and Serina who played for Port in the recent SAPSASA Soccer Carnival.

Week 5 was Science week, and the theme was Food: Different by Design. In recognition of this, classes participated in a number of science activities which used food. From tower building challenges using spaghetti and marshmallows, to rainbow-coloured jellybeans in water, and a 'make your own sherbet' activity, students had a lot of fun investigating and discovering the properties of different foods.
Have a look at some of the creative and investigative ways our students participated in Science Week!
Hi to all our school community!
Where has the term gone…?!
This week we launched our yard student mentors and already the students, especially the younger ones, are seeking them out for any assistance they might need. The bright ‘Green Jackets’ certainly stand out!
I am working with some classes using "What’s the Buzz" social emotional learning program. The students are certainly enjoying the games that teach how to win and lose with grace, and to think about others’ feelings rather than simply their own.
The results from our Wellbeing Survey have shown encouraging levels of increased wellbeing in our student cohort, and several decreases among the low wellbeing categories. It encourages us to keep strengthening our behaviour expectations and our restorative approaches.
We have 10-15 students on track to graduate with Children’s University. If your child is involved, please remind them that it is not too late to accumulate those hours! Encourage them to come and see me if they need any prompts.
Our school gathered last week to show gratitude to our SSO’s in recognition of SSO Week. They all loved their thank you cards made by our Young Leaders on everyone’s behalf.
Young leaders are meeting each week and we are planning some recess time clubs to start soon. We are also looking at a fun schoolwide fundraiser in late Term 4. Stay tuned!
Leah, Dot and myself visited a neighbouring school last Friday to check out how they are going on their journey of 'Interoception' as a whole school initiative. Interoception has been called our sixth sense, and it all about learning to recognise and appropriately respond to the signals that our bodies give to us to help us regulate. It really affirmed and sharpened our focus as we go forward. Exciting things to come!

In week 5 some Year 6 & 7 students got the chance to play school basketball against other schools at St Clair, the home court of the Gladiators district team. It was really exciting to represent our school the SAPSASA Basketball sporting event. It was a long and difficult day, but excitingly, we placed third, winning four games out of six. There was definitely a lot of competition, and we played against very strong basketball teams like Pooraka, who did give us a run for our money! There was a lot of excitement, sportsmanship from both Year 6 & 7 teams and, overall, we had the best time ever!

A friendly reminder the Parent Group is running their annual Father's Day Stall next Tuesday the 31st of August and Wednesday the 1st of September before school. There will be lots of gifts for the students to choose from!
If you have a child in Reception, Year One or Year Two, you are likely to have heard about decodable readers. Research shows that using decodable readers as a way of practising blending letter-sounds into words is crucial for reading development. Until the end of September, the Little Learners Love Literacy readers are available to download for FREE to Apple devices through the App store.

The Little Learners website has lots of great information for parents and carers, too. Check it out.
